In the article, "Should Everyone Get a Trophy?" by Lauren Tarshis, she talked about how kids get a trophy just for showing up to team practices. Our school system decided more than a decade ago to pass kids on to the next grade regardless of how successful they were on their report card. Do you think kids should fail?
Should Kids Get Held Back?
I think kids should be held back. Is it right that all you have to do is show up, and you’ll pass? Should they be able to go ahead to the next grade without learning what they need to move on or getting a good education? I don’t think this is right.
Eventually life won’t be that easy, school only gets more difficult as you move on. If you are not held back you may not be able to pass highschool, college, university, or even be able to get a job and succeed in life. Why are we making kids think it’s okay to fail, you’ll just keep going? Then as soon as you hit highschool you’re forced to pass or you get held back. How can they pass when they couldn't even pass the previous grades. I think it should be started when you start school. This will teach children you have to work to get places in life. It will help them tons in the future.
If your learning is way behind the rest of the class you’re going to hold them all back. The teacher will focus on catching the one student up, and the rest of the kids won’t learn anything. Then what’s the point in school? Just learning the same things over and over, or worse, doing no work at all. In my opinion it would be much easier to hold the student back with kids at their level of learning. It would solve many problems.
However, people may say that they could remain in the grade for many years and it could affect their self esteem. But I can assure you that wouldn't happen. Eventually teachers will figure out that there's something wrong. They will be diagnosed and get the help they need. If they are struggling all through school, life won’t be good. We are in school for many many years in our life, and you need to be successful throughout it. So by recognizing you have learning disabilities or need extra help, it will make your school career so much better.
Should kids get the message that failing is fine, because you can still move on? It’s like saying you don’t have to know anything, but don’t worry you will still get a great job. Life doesn’t work that way. It is a great lesson in life if someone fails. Next time the student will work much harder and be successful or the school will figure out there is something wrong and get the child the help they need.
There are many reasons why it is a good thing to hold kids back. Research says it’s good because when you’re held back you get extra help, independent work to help you get the education you need, and much more. Eventually students will be more successful by failing. They will be able to learn everything even if it takes them longer than the rest. This is why I believe kids should be held back in school.
